Endodontic Treatment: When and Why You Need It

DEFINITION:

Endodontic therapy is a specialized dental procedure used to treat infection inside a tooth, specifically the root canal. The procedure is painless and can save a tooth that would otherwise have to be extracted

WHY IT IS NECESSARY:

Root canal infection is caused by bacteria that enter the tooth, often due to:

caries
leaking or decayed fillings
injury to the tooth, such as from a fall or impact

WHEN IS THE ENDONDOTIC TREATMENT NEEDED:

Endodontic therapy is necessary when x-rays show that the pulp is infected with bacteria.

Symptoms of pulp infection:

Pain with hot or cold foods and drinks
Pain when chewing
Mobility of the tooth
As the infection progresses, symptoms may temporarily subside as the pulp dies, but the infection continues to spread.

Advanced symptoms:

Pain that returns when chewing
Swelling in the gums
Pus discharge from the tooth
Swelling in the cheek or jaw
Discoloration of the tooth

WHO ENDODONTICAL TREATMENT IS PERFOMED:

Local anesthesia is administered for comfort
Bacteria are removed from the root canal
The root canal is cleaned and sealed with a filling or crown
The procedure is painless and similar in feel to a regular filling.

RECOVERY AND CARE:

After treatment is complete:

Avoid biting hard foods until the final restoration is complete
Mild discomfort is normal, treated with painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen
